Xbox Game Pass Price Hikes Delayed By Microsoft

Microsoft pretty much set the internet on fire last week when they announced a huge price hike for Xbox Game Pass users, which led to so many cancellations that the cancellation page crashed.

Yesterday, however, The Verge have reported that following the huge backlash following the 50% price increase that the increase will be delayed for several countries.

Microsoft stated in an email to Game Pass Ultimate users “At this time, these increases will only affect new purchases and will not affect your current subscription for the market in which you reside, as long as you are on an auto-recurring plan. Should you choose to cancel your plan and repurchase, you will be charged at the new current rate.”

For those of you wondering if this effects you, The Verge reported that users in Poland, Ireland, Italy, Germany, India and South Korea have reported receiving this email which probably means it only applies to those countries. This is only a delay though, as new users or anyone that cancelled that wants to re-join will have to pay the new higher price. Microsoft also stated that if any changes were to occur on your account that you would be notified “at least 60 days in advance”.

While this reprieve is something, it’s safe to say that I think many gamers both in and outside of those countries will not be coming to Gamepass – or at least not for long periods. I could maybe see myself purchasing a one off subscription to play a certain game, but I can’t personally see myself going beyond that.
