Some concerning rumors have popped up on the ResetEra forums, and if these rumors are true, then it’s the end for PC game pass.
These rumors come from the ResetEra mod Slayven, who claimed that their information came from an anonymous source who has proven themselves reliable. But as with anything that’s unconfirmed, let’s take everything we’re about to discuss with a pinch of salt.
As I mentioned at the start of the article, the most alarming part of the leaks is the supposed end of PC game pass, which will chuck all but the most expensive Ultimate tier in the bin. So it will still technically be possible to access Game Pass on PC, you will need to cough up for the ultimate tier. Alongside this Microsoft will allegedly be increasing the price of the Xbox Game Pass ultimate tier – so you’ll also have to pay more for the privilege. Unfortunately Slayven didn’t have any concrete information on when we expect these changes, just that we can expect them at some point next year.
The other big change that we can allegedly expect is the addition of an ad supported tier to Game Pass. Surprisingly, this is not a cheaper paid tier with ads according to these leaks – it will be free and time based with forced ads. Exactly how this will work is unclear – but I would imagine that you get to play a more limited selection of games for X amount of time before you have to stop and watch an ad.
I sincerely hope that the PC Game Pass lower tiers will not be going anywhere, it’s been a great way to play some of the biggest releases without having to cough up a kidney, and also a fantastic way to try out games you might be unsure of. With gaming getting more and more expensive, it would be a real shame to lose out on the more affordable tiers for PC Game Pass.
But Slayven also claimed that we will be seeing some price increases alongside the renamed tiers, and this has now been confirmed thanks to a new post on Xbox Wire. So this definitely lends some credence to the other Game Pass leaks being true.
