Well it’s bad news for those of us, like me, still had some hope for the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake. Ubisoft has announced that a total of six games have been cancelled, including the Sands of Time remake.
Alongside this, they also announced delays for seven other games, and even a closure of two of their studios. Unfortunately, we don’t know the details of the other games that were cancelled alongside the PoP: Sands of Time remake as it was the only one actually named. All we know is that three of them were brand new IPs and one other was a mobile game.
In a recent article I wrote discussing an obviously now defunct rumoured release date for the game, I did touch on the development hell the remake had been going through. It was first announced back in 2020, before being “delayed” in 2021 before being given back to the original devs in 2022. As I’m sure most of you are aware, a long development cycle fraught with drama like this is usually a bad sign.
So I won’t lie, I did have some concerns about the Sands of Time remake, but I still had hope that one of the best games from the PS2 would get some much needed love in the modern era. But that dream is now dead.
Ubisoft also made the disappointing but not really surprising announcement that their core focus going forward will be “open world games and live services”. Yawn.
But, for those of you concerned about the remaster of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, it seems that is not included in the six cancelled games but is included in the seven games delayed. Personally I don’t know if Black Flag even really needs a remaster, but it is one of the best AC games at least.
