If you’re at all a fan of the modern Legend of Zelda games or the Xenoblade Chronicles, you will be very familiar with Japanese developer Monolith Soft. They of course played a role in the development of Skyward Sword, but also with the more modern Breath of the Wild and Tears of The Kingdom.
But it seems that Nintendo general manager Daiki Iwamoto has other desires for Nintendo’s partnership with Monolith, as he stated during a dual interview with himself and Monolith Soft director Yasuhiro Fujita which was posted by Monolith.
Iwamoto said during the interview, “Monolith Soft now has a system in place that allows them to handle everything from coming up with ideas in the early stages of development to incorporating them into the actual game, so we expected them to be more involved in the creative aspects than ever before.
“I would like Monolith Soft to play a central role as a strong partner in creating the Zelda series from scratch. I hope that the know-how we have cultivated through our work together will further enhance the overall team strength of Monolith Soft, and we will continue to create unique series titles together.”
Honestly this is a very interesting statement. Obviously this has been translated, so naturally there may be something lost in translation but this makes it seem very likely we will see Monolith take the reigns of developing a new Zelda game. Although the modern Zelda games definitely have their issues (cough) weapon degradation, overall I really enjoyed them both and they have seen pretty much universal critical acclaim.
But just what would Monolith do if they were given the lead developer role? Of course, Zelda going open world is already been ticked off if we’re comparing to Xenoblade, but Monolith definitely has some tricks up its sleeve that could make this hypothetical next gen Zelda game very interesting indeed.
Of course, this is far from confirmed so we shall have to wait and see if this ever materialises.
